From the community

Coffee is bringing us stable income. Thanks to Naandi who is guiding us in every way. This year I earned more than Rs 20,000 from an acre and I am hoping to get more than Rs 25,000 in the next coffee season.

- Tiku, Widow, Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh (December 2006)

In the process of understanding how to grow coffee organically, we have also developed a greater community feeling and ownership that this is our future and we must take care of it. We are confident now that we can solve our problem and plan ahead for ourselves.

- Kumbho, Vice President, Promoters Body, Tribal Organic Coffee Growers Mutually aided cooperative society Ltd, Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Naandi’s training programmes not only helped me in growing better coffee plants but also paddy. I want to attend more of these training programmes and learn as much as I can. Naandi has also made my work very easy. They pick up the coffee fruits as soon as they are plucked and save me a lot of time and effort. Now I am also planning to plant banana trees in between the coffee plants.

- Balmothi Gaddangi, Jamguda village, Dumbriguda mandal, Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh (December 2006)

I will never give up coffee now. The coffee plants are like my children. Just as your children look after when you are old, these plants will look after my family for many years. I earned Rs 11,505 from the coffee crop this year. I had never seen so much money in my life. Other farmers also grow coffee but our plantation coffee because of Naandi’s help in marketing is earning us more money than anything we have received in this area so far.

- Gemmila Tikku, Gondivalsa village, Araku Valley, AP (September 2006)

From the government

Naandi has created sustainable livelihoods fro indigenous people in the difficult hilly terrains of Visakhapatnam. It has achieved the twin objectives if sustainable with appropriate knowledge transfer. They also have shown how cost effective solutions can be up scaled in a very short period of time.

- Dr Manmohan Singh, IAS, Former Tribal Welfare Commissioner, Andhra Pradesh (December 2006)

From our partners

The organic coffee project has revived the hopes of the tribal families in Araku. Degraded forestlands have now become prosperous agro farms. In the non traditional coffee belt of India, this is a unique intervention with a great potential to reach optimal scale in the state.
