From the children

I’ll give my school 99/100. We are always learning new things here. We recently went to the zoo. It was the first time I’ve gone out of this area. Most of the time I’m at home helping my mother look after my six younger sisters. My mother keeps telling us not to be illiterate like her. This school makes it easy for us to learn. I wish Std VI and VII are added to this primary school soon then U won’t have to leave it next year when I get a promotion to Std VI.

- Asma Begum Sheik Nabi, Std V, Government Primary School, Bibi-Ka-Chasma I, Hyderabad (October 2005).

We come to school and carry on a lot of activities like story telling, singing, and reciting poems. We learn lessons through songs and dramas which is very interesting, compared to the regular classroom teaching.

- Venkatesh, Class V, Government Primary School, Sheikpet, Hyderabad (May 2006).

From the community

Two years ago my daughter used to study in this school, but due to teachers' negligence and school environment, I did not like it and joined my daughter in Private school. When I came to know of the various interventions (reading writing camps, health facilities, competitions) of Naandi Foundation, I immediately joined my daughter in this school.

- Fatima Begum, parent of a student in GPS Vattepally, Hyderabad (August 2006)

We want our children to learn good manners rather than simply learning the subjects and we are happy with the interventions that have happened in schools last year. Our children are showing interest in studies and telling us things happening in school after coming home.

- Shakeel, father of a student studying in GPS Round Table, Hyderabad (August 2006).

From Government

Infrastructure is a real problem in the rural areas. Children are usually attracted to beautiful and comfortable premises. The computer aided learning or CAL centres are a real gift for the children which helps them towards better learning.

- Tirupathi Rao, Mandal Education Officer, Hukumpeta, Visakhapatnam district, AP (August 2006).

There is a lot for the child here. The computer centre is a huge draw, the interactive classroom sessions are very popular and there seems to be abuzz about the school. For the first time in my tenure as principal, I had to turn away children coming for enrolment because we have no space. Absenteeism has fallen from 30 per cent to just 2 to 3 per cent now.

- Manzar Ibrahim, Headmaster & teacher, government Primary School, Mustaidpura, Hyderabad (October 2005).

None of my children are forced to go to work by the families. Until two years ago parents would come into classrooms and take their children away for petty work at the vegetable market. No amount of convincing them worked. But after the reading writing camps in the vacations, we began newspaper reading sessions in the school. The children loved it. We also started using the library books to hold story telling classes. We find children expressing more interest in coming to school. In fact, I have been noticing parents dropping their children to the school, and not taking them away. I can’t be happier.

-Vidyavathi, Headmistress, Government Boys Upper Primary School, Sabzimandi, Hyderabad (October 2005).

The Science and Maths teaching learning material provided by Naandi especially the science lab kit and library books are very helpful for teaching children. They are eager to do and learn things because it has helped them understand concepts in an easier and better manner. Naandi has really laid a foundation on which a new beginning has been made towards ensuring quality education for governemtn schoolchildren.

- Lakshmi, HM, Primary School, Hukumpeta, Visakhapatnam district, AP (August 2006).

Earlier a lot of children were unable to identify alphabets and were never interested in what was taught to them in class. Since the time Naandi commenced its activities in school children have started taking in an interest. Naandi’s interventions have really helped the children and now they can even read an entire story. The school I was working in earlier did not have any such extra curricular activities. All schools should follow this pattern to improve the children’s learning levels.

- Rajeshwari, Teacher, Government Primary School, Sheikpet, Hyderabad (May 2006).

The learning materials given to us in the school are very interesting and I have learnt a lot here. Earlier none of heses were available in o u school. Now, I am able to study better and like attending school.

- Anita, Std V, Government Primary School, Sheikpet, Hyderabad (May 2006).

Naandi’s services towards education in backward and interior areas like Gattu mandal are significant. Awareness programmes for enrolment of children into schools, quality education for children and material given to the schools are very good.

- A Krishnaveni, Mandal Resource Person, Gattu Mandal, Mahabubnagar district, AP (July 2006).

Naandi brings in corporate and individual participation to support elementary education in government school. These are the kind of public-private partnerships we need for enhancing the quality of education.

- Rajyalakshmi, Minister for School Education, Andhra Pradesh (October 2005)
