Safe Drinking Water

We have 4 per cent of the world’s water availability and 15 per cent of the world’s population to support. And though we have made commendable progress towards improving water access for our populations, according to the latest Millennium Development Goals review by the UN, we must know that out of 35 Indian states, only 7 have achieved full coverage of providing a protected water source for their villages.

Quality of drinking water continues to be a concern and this is reflected by the fact that about 21 per cent of communicable diseases are water borne (namely - cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, hepatitis A, malaria and filaria) and 75 per cent of water related deaths are that of children below five years. It is primarily the poor that are severely affected especially in terms of ability to afford recurrent treatment or afford losses of working days due to illnesses. Three million working days lost each year to water-borne diseases at a cost of $600 million.

Making safe drinking water a reality for all: our Safe Drinking Water programme brings the assurance of certified safe drinking water into a village through a public private partnership between the village panchayats, technology providers and us as coordinators. This partnership makes water available to every person in a village equitably as purified water is made available to all @ of 10 paise per litre making it affordable to the poorest of the poor.
