We began working in Maharashtra in 2006. Our first point
of entry was Mumbai where our intervention was to improve the learning levels
of children in government schools through a Programme called Ensuring Children
Learn. And within these schools our special focus is on encouraging the
education of girl children through the Nanhi Kali sponsorship programme that
ensures girls get all the support to complete ten years of formal schooling.
In 2008 the state government agreed to
follow through with project devised by us: called the Child
Learning and Tracking System (CLTS) that will help the state
maintain an online database of all students in the Mumbai with
essentail information such as enrolment,
attendance, migration, retention and most importantly their
learning levels.
Apart from programmes in elementary schools
for youth, who come from the poorer sections
of socially backward communities (the scheduled castes and
tribes) we have set up a school in Pune, as a part of our Sustainable Livelihoods Programme that trains them with mainstream skills to make them
more employable in the
organized sector, and also ensuring that they get jobs. Called the
Mahindra Pride School, this institution is completely supported
by the Mahindra and Mahindra Group. |
